According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the target of implementing the National Optical Fibre Network (NOFN) project to provide broadband connectivity to 250,000 gram panchayats by 2016 is quite ambitious. TRAI has stated that the government should adopt a more practical approach in setting up broadband network across the country.
In this regard, the government should first provide an access network to the 75 per cent of the areas which are already connected by the private operators and then move towards the areas with no connectivity.
TRAI also emphasised on the need for innovations in government’s plan and added that focus should be on developing applications in order to make the e-governance projects successful.
