The Indian government is planning to provide Wi-Fi services at select public places in 25 cities in the country by June 2015. For this, it has planned to partner with three-four Wi-Fi service providers to launch Wi-Fi hotspots in these cities. The Wi-Fi project has been undertaken by the Department of Telecommunications and the Ministry of Urban Development.

The rollout of Wi-Fi network is part of the Digital India programme under which the government aims to cover cities with population of over one million and tourist destinations with Wi-Fi services by December 2015.

Once the licences for providing Wi-Fi services are allotted, the telecom companies will get around three months from the date they accept the purchase orders to complete the rollout.

Also, in order to launch these services, the government has separately identified 25 archaeological monuments to provide free Wi-Fi access to the tourists.
