According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the telephone subscriber base in India increased from 951.84 million at the end of August 2014 to 957.61 million at the end of September 2014, registering a growth of 0.61 per cent.
The share of urban subscribers has increased from 566.60 million at the end of August 2014 to 569.56 million at the end of September 2014. Further, the share of rural subscribers has increased from 385.25 million to 388.05 million during the same period. As per TRAI, the overall teledensity increased from 76.36 per cent at the end of August 2014 to 76.75 per cent at the end of September 2014.
The country's total wireless subscriber base increased from 924.32 million at the end of August 2014 to 930.20 million at the end of September 2014, registering a monthly growth of 0.64 per cent. The overall wireless teledensity in India reached 74.55 per cent as of end-September 2014.
As of September 2014, private operators held 90.31 per cent of the wireless market, while state-owned operators - Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) together held 9.69 per cent market share.
Meanwhile, the number of broadband subscribers increased from 74.31 million at the end of August 2014 to 74.75 million at the end of August 2014, exhibiting the monthly growth rate of 1.92 per cent.
