The Telecom Commission has cleared the decision for full mobile number portability (MNP). The MNP policy is based on the recommendations by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). As per the recommendations, the full MNP is to be implemented by March 31, 2015.
MNP was introduced in 2011 facilitating the mobile phone users to retain their mobile numbers even when shifting from one service provider to another in the same service area. After the full MNP is implemented, the service will allow the subscribers to retain their mobile numbers even when they relocate to places outside their circles.
But a final nod on the decision from the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, is still awaited
According to TRAI, MNP requests in August 2014 were from 2.83 million subscribers. With this, the cumulative MNP requests increased from 126.72 million at the end of July 2014 to 129.56 million at the end of August 2014.
