Internet protocol television (IPTV) services launched by MTNL in Mumbai and Delhi are reportedly illegal, as per the Cable Televisions Network Act. MTNL is offering these services under a cable TV licence, which is not permissible as the use of set-top boxes is involved. Moreover, MTNL does not have a unified access service licence, which permits a company to offer triple play. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has requested the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting for its legal opinion. MTNL, meanwhile, has tied up with Aksh Optic Fibre to offer the service.
