TRAI provides clarity on issues related to nationwide MNP

News , September 08, 2014

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has clarified to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) that no additional entry fee and bank guarantee should be charged by Mobile Number Portability (MNP) operators. The Telecom Commission will now consider the recent clarifications from TRAI and will take a final decision on the matter.

The regulator had submitted its recommendations on full MNP on September 25, 2013. DoT had thereafter sought clarifications on issues like additional entry fee, bank guarantees and clarification on number of players to be involved in the launch of nationwide MNP service in the country.

Earlier in June 2014, the government granted in-principle approval to full MNP to allow customers to retain numbers even after switching operator or location. At present, subscribers are allowed to change their service providers while retaining same number within a circle only. The government is trying to achieve full MNP by March 2015.
