TRAI releases telecom subscription data for June 2014
As per the recently released data by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the overall teledensity in the country has increased from 75.51 per cent in May 2014 to 75.80 per cent in June 2014. The share of urban subscribers increased to 59.36 per cent from 59.28 per cent, while the share of rural subscribers decreased from 40.72 per cent to 40.64 per cent in June 2014.
The total wireless subscriber base grew at 0.52 per cent from 910.16 million to 914.92 million during the same period. Private operators held 89.85 per cent of the wireless subscriber market share, whereas state-run companies Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) held 10.15 per cent of the market share in June 2014. In the wireline segment, the total subscriber base declined from 28.1 million in May 2014 to 28 million in June 2014.
Till June 2014, about 123.87 million subscribers had submitted requests to different service providers for porting their mobile numbers. In the broadband segment, the subscriber base increased by 5.35 per cent from 65.3 million to 68.8 million during the same period.
Among the operators, Vodafone India added the maximum subscribers, with 1.62 million new users joining its network in June 2014, taking its subscriber base to 169.8 million. Bharti Airtel added 1.01 million subscribers, taking its subscriber base to 209.2 million, whereas Idea Cellular added 1.29 million users and its overall base stood at 139 million in June 2014.
Telewings Communications added 1.43 million subscribers while Reliance Communications added 0.51 million users in June 2014. Tata Teleservices Limited’s (TTSL) subscriber base reduced by 0.1 million users while BSNL and MTNL both witnessed a reduction in their subscriber base by 2.14 million and 30,304 users respectively during the month.
