The Ministry of Communications and IT has reported that the gross revenue for 22 service providers including Bharti Airtel, Reliance Communications, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited and Tata Teleservicies Limited (TTSL) declined in the quarter ended December 2013 as compared to the previous quarter. On the other hand, 39 service providers, including Vodafone India, Idea Cellular, Sistema Shyam TeleServices Limited (SSTL) and Aircel, saw a rise in gross revenue during the same period.
The ministry also stated that over 102.5 million out of about 910 million mobile subscribers have used the mobile number portability (MNP) facility till June 30, 2014. Further, Idea Cellular, Vodafone India and Bharti Airtel have gained net subscribers from MNP, while other companies have witnessed a subscriber churn. Till June 30, 2014, Idea Cellular had a net addition of around 9.5 million customers; Vodafone had a net gain of 7.46 million subscribers while Airtel's net gain stood at over 3.63 million.
The number of Internet subscribers in the country grew 5.4 per cent from 238.71 million in December 2013 to 251.59 million to March 2014. Maharashtra (including Mumbai and Goa) circle had the highest number of Internet subscribers at over 40.21 million, followed by Uttar Pradesh (including Uttarakhand) at 24.32 million, Tamil Nadu at 20.41 million and Andhra Pradesh (including Telangana) at 17.63 million. Meanwhile, Himachal Pradesh had the lowest number of Internet subscribers at 2.04 million.
