India has become the fifth country in the world to cross the 100 million mobile subscriber mark as of end-May. China is number one with 404 million subscribers followed by the US, Japan and Russia with 185 million, 150 million and 140 million mobile users respectively. India is the fastest growing market in terms of percentage growth rate and second in terms of absolute numbers, adding over 4 million new users each month. The government has asked operators to verify each subscriber based on a new system called Visitor Location Record, which only counts those connections that are being actively used.
