The government has announced a Rs 10 billion project to convert the defence services' wireless operations to optic fibre cable. This is expected to release 45 MHz of spectrum and will help meet the immediate spectrum demand of mobile telecom operators. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) will be the executing agency for the project, which is already under way. The spectrum released will be allocated to operators for offering both 2G (existing) as well as 3G (next-generation) mobile services. The project is likely to be completed over the next two-three months though there is no final decision on how to fund the project.
