OFC network deployed in 23,604 GPs till July 2015, says government
The government has stated that optical fibre cable (OFC) network had been rolled out in 23,064 gram panchayats (GP) till July 2015. In comparison, the 50,000 GPs were supposed to be covered with the OFC network by March 2015.
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has further contended that the execution of the BharatNet project increased over 30 times since the new government came into power. The OFC network has increased from 250 km of OFC to 54,352 km as of July 2015.
The government is also likely to extend the deadline for completion of the project by another two years. This can be attributed to the delay in procurement of network equipment. Further, the scale of the BharatNet project has been widened, which has increased the execution cost manifold. Under the project, the government will provide high-speed broadband connectivity to 250,000 GPs as well to 300,000 schools, 30,000 health centres, and 200,000 government institutions. In addition, Bharat Broadband Network Limited, the executing agency of the project, will set up 250,000 Wi-Fi hotspots across the country.
