Telecom Ministry directs operators to optimise networks to resolve the issue of call drops

August 26, 2015

The Ministry of Communications and IT has directed telecom operators to optimise their networks to resolve the issue of call drops. The Ministry has also stated that it will provide support on the policy front to facilitate installation of towers.

This comes after the issue of frequent call drops have worsened in the recent months. Recently, the Prime Minister also discussed this issue, directing the officials to resolve this issue on a priority basis. Meanwhile, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is set to come out with a consultation paper over calls drops, which will prescribe the disincentive mechanism to curb the issue.

The telecom operators have cited shutting down of mobile towers and radiation fears along with the lack of spectrum, as the major reasons for call drops. The operators have also stated that about 7,000-10,000 sites have been locked or shut down across major cities, which has culminated to frequent call drops. The industry has thus sought a uniform national policy for installation of mobile towers.
