According to TRAI, there was an addition of 4.55 million phones in February 2006, taking the total number of connections in the country to 135.5 million, amounting to a teledensity of 12.1 per cent. Almost the entire growth has been in the mobile segment, with GSM contributing 3.17 million and CDMA contributing 1.13 million. In the fixed line segment, there has been an addition of about 250,000. The CDMA segment registered a growth of 5.08 per cent in its subscriber base. The highest growth in new connections in February 2006 was in Andhra Pradesh with an addition of about 500,000. At the end of February 2006, over 900,000 broadband connections were provided and broadband coverage by public sector service providers increased to 250 towns.
