Ericsson has refused to negotiate the price per line for BSNL's 60 million line tender. While Ericsson had quoted a price of $107 per line, BSNL and DoT wanted to reduce this rate to under $100 a line. If the price is lowered to around $90 per line, BSNL will save over Rs 18 billion. Meanwhile, citing the lack of 3Gspectrum policy in India, the minister has advised BSNL to drop the 3G component of the tender (3G accounts for 25 per cent of the tender) and go for 2G networks instead.
