T-Mobile's capex for the first quarter of 2013 reaches $1.1 billion

May 09, 2013

T-Mobile US has reported capex of $1.1 billion for the first quarter of 2013.

Most of the telecom operator's capex was on account of achieving 200 million covered points-of-presence (PoPs) with 4G by the end of 2013. In the first quarter of 2013, T-Mobile US launched 4G in seven major metropolitan areas and upgraded about 16,000 sites to HSPA+ on 1900 MHz spectrum. T-Mobile US expects to meet the goal of 100 million covered PoPs by mid-2013. The operator has upgraded about 16,000 cell sites as part of the network modernisation program over the last 10 months.

For the first quarter of 2013, the operator's revenues declined by 9.9 per cent. However, the decline in revenues was offset by increases in equipment revenue, resulting in total revenues registering a decline of 7.1 per cent.

For the period under review, the operator's branded post-paid average revenue per user (ARPU) declined by 6.3 per cent to $54.07 partially reflecting increased adoption of value plans. The company's branded prepaid ARPU increased by 11.3 per cent and stood at $28.25.

T-Mobile US added 3,000 subscriber in the first quarter of 2013. With the decline in service revenue the operator's earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization declined by 7.5 per cent.
