BlackBerry posts profit of $98 million for the fourth quarter ended March 2013

April 01, 2013

The Canada-based handset maker BlackBerry has reported profit of $98 million for the fourth quarter ended March 2013.

During the quarter under review, the phone manufacturer shipped 6 million smartphones, including about 1 million units of the newly launched smartphone BlackBerry 10. The company also shipped 70,000 PlayBook tablets during the quarter.

Further, the company’s revenue declined from $4.2 billion in the fourth quarter of financial year 2012 to $2.7 billion for the corresponding period in 2013.

For the full-year ending 2012-13, BlackBerry registered a decline in its revenues from $18.4 billion in 2011-2012 to $11.1 billion. The company, however, reported a net loss of $646 million for 2012-2013, against a net profit of $1.2 billion in 2011-2012. At the end of the fourth quarter of the financial year 2013, BlackBerry reported a subscriber base of 76 million.

Going forward, the company plans to increase its marketing investment in the first quarter of the financial year 2014 to support the global launch of BlackBerry10.
